Wisconsin judge and World War Two Marine Corps veteran Joseph McCarthy defeated longtime U.S. Senator Robert M. La Follette Jr. in the GOP primary for that state.

The Indian Claims Commission was established to fix a fair market value for land taken from Native Americans "at the time the land was taken".

British author H. G. Wells died at age 79.

I've never been a fan of Wells'.


Minnesota Congressman William James Gallagher, notable for his humble work background before being elected to Congress in 1944, died in office at age 71.
