Sunday, July 21, 1974. Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Israeli no, Turkish misidentification.

The day prior, July 20, 1974, the Turks invaded Cyprus in response to the July 15, 1974 move by the Greek military junta ruling the country to annex the island to Greece which had seen a coup take place on the island, replacing Archbishop Makarios III with Greek nationalist

Greek commandos landed on the island on this day.

The USS Harwood, which later became the TCG Kocatepe.

The Turkish Air Force, in a case of mistaken identification, sank the Turkish destroyer TCG Kocatepe, and heavily damaged the Adatepe and Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak off the coast of Paphos at Cyprus. The vessels were misidentified as Greek vessels.

The Israeli cabinet voted to turn down a proposal to begin discussions with moderate Palestinian representatives to establish an independent Palestinian nation on the West Bank in exchange for Arab recognition of Israel's right to exist.

Egypt gave exclusive oil and gas prospecting rights in the Gulf of Suez to Standard Oil and the same for the Red Sea to Mobil Oil and Union Oil.

Monday, August 3, 1914. "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."

Germany declared war on Belgium and France following King Albert of Belgium refusing to allow Germany to violate Belgian neutrality.

Again, the more you look at it, war guilt? Germany had it.

British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey made his famous statement; "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."

He'd be proven correct.

Earlier that day, he had urged the House of Commons to declare war on Germany if Belgian neutrality was violated.

German troops arrived in Kalisz, Poland, part of the Russian Empire. Gun battles would break out later that day involving civilians.

The First Cadre Company of the Austro Hungarian Army was formed by Józef Piłsudski as part of his goal of achieving Polish independence. The inevitable war within a war had begun.

Winston Churchill ordered the seizure of two Ottoman battleship under construction in the UK.

The German Navy captured the Russian steamer Ryazan in the Pacific and sent it to Tsingtao, their colony, for conversion into an auxiliary cruiser.

Lex Anteinternet?

This blog has been around since 2009. In the very first post, we asked the question: "What the heck is this blog about?"

Our answer to the question was: "The intent of this blog is to try to explore and learn a few things about the practice of law prior to the current era. That is, prior to the internet, prior to easy roads, and the like. How did it work, how regional was it, how did lawyers perceive their roles, and how were they perceived?"

We also noted: "Part of the reason for this, quite frankly, has something to do with minor research for a very slow moving book."

All of this is still true, but the focus of the blog has changed somewhat. It now focuses on the era from 1890 to 1920 in general, rather than on the law and lawyers specifically, although that may be far from obvious. It's also become the location where we comment on anything we feel moved to comment on.

We hope you'll feel moved to comment as well. While we moderate every comment, so as to weed out Spam, we greatly appreciate the comments where they are offered, and hope to see more.
