Monday, July 2, 1900. Measles.

A quarantine was declared in Nome, Alaska, due to a measles outbreak in the Native American community.  Mortality rates in some communities reached 100%.

Let that sink in.  100%.  Up to 2,000 people died.

The LZ1 Zeppelin, the first rigid airship, flew from the Manzell district of Friedrichshafen, Germany, near Lake Constance for 3.75 miles (6.04 km) in 18 minutes before being forced to land due to a broken part.

Diphtheria antitoxin ran out in Nome. The serum run had reached Kaltag.

The Khost Rebellion in Afghanistan ended with the reign of King Amanullah Khan intact.

A national news media frenzy started when Cave explorer Floyd Collins became trapped in Sand Cave, Kentucky.  The story went on for days, but did not conclude happily.

High winds blew a train off of a viaduct in County Donegal, Ireland, killing four people.

Sunday, May 24, 1914. Trying to put in at Nome.


Robert Bartlett arrived in Nome on the whaler Herman in his epic effort to provide relief to the Canadian Arctic Expedition.  Ice prevented the ship from putting in, however.  It turned towards St. Michael, where three days later Bartlett was able to radio the dire news to Ottawa.

The Belgian Catholic Party won 41 out of 88 seats of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives.
