Saturday December 17, 1923. Headlines obsolete and current.

Sometimes, the headlines are rather similar to what we read today.  Aliens smuggled into U.S. "wholesale".  Mass shooting.  Others are thankfully firmly cemented in the past.

And some are just weird.

And then things stay the same in other ways:

Fascists Black Shirt Commandant General of the Blackshirts, Cpt. Cesare Maria De Vecchi, arrived in Mogadishu to take office as the colonial governor of Italian Somaliland, which would require military expeditions into its more remote regions.

He had started out in life as a lawyer before his fascist role.  After the Italian surrender in 1943, he had allowed German troops into areas under his command, but nonetheless was condemned to death by the Social Republic.  He went into hiding and died of natural causes in 1959, having been briefly involved in the post war neo fascist movement.

William Butler Yeats delivered his Nobel address.

Turkey and Hungary entered into a treaty of friendship.

A patent was applied for in the UK for the pioneering Celestion electric speaker for radios.

Monday, December 14, 1942. Buna taken by the Allies, the USS Nevada at sea, Ethiopia declares war.

Today in World War II History—December 14, 1942: US and Australian troops occupy Buna, New Guinea. On sub USS Grayback in the Bismarck Islands, an appendectomy is performed by a pharmacist's mate.
Reports Sarah Sundin.

Ethiopia declared war on Germany, Italy and Japan.

The country had lost a bitter war against the Italians prior to World War Two, the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, but then was liberated by the British Army in 1941, after which the remaining Italian forces launched a forgotten guerilla war that continued on into 1943, ending with the Italian surrender to the Allies.

Royal Navy cruiser Argonaut was torpedoed and heavily damaged in the Mediterranean by Italian submarine Mocenigo.

Thursday. June 18, 1914. Wolves and their prey.

Missionaries from the Taochau region south of Lanzho reported that forces loyal to Bai Lang had murdered 10,000 inhabitants of that town after escaping from Chinese forces.

Did that occur?  Perhaps, but 10,000 people in a short amount of time, while not unprecedented, is a lot. Still, it would appear certain that the White Wolf's forces had been murderous.

Italian King Victor Emmanuel founded the Colonial Order of the Star of Italy.  It was awarded to soldiers and officers with exceptional military service in Italy's North African colonies, colonies that pretty much didn't want Italy to be there.

The order was disbanded in 1943.

I wonder if there's any living recipients still with us?

On the plus side, Italian North Africa did give us Claudia Cardinale.

Actor E. G. Marshall was born.

He was well known, but he was no Claudia Cardinale.
