The 100 Days Offensive: The Battle of Albert concludes

On this day in 1918 the Battle of Albert, part of the Second Battle of the Somme, concluded with the Anglo American capture of Albert and Arras.

The battle, the third by that name, was part of the Battle of Bapaume.

Monday, September 28, 1914.



The Germans began bombarding the fortress protecting Antwerp.

The French stopped the German advance around Arras.

Cpl. Grault had a bad day.


Grault was a French reservist who attempted to sell the plans for the Eiffel Tower wireless station to the German, and was therefore stripped of his rank and paraded before his cohorts.

The Germans scuttled the SMS Cormoran, SMS Iltis, SMS Luchs, and SMS Tiger off the coast of Tsingtau, China.

Sunday, September 27, 1914. Cossack barbarity.

German forces forced back the French around the River Somme near Albert.

Belgian volunteers encountered German troops at Buggenhout, but retreated in the end to Mol.

The Russians forced back the Germans at Osowiec Fortress.

Cossacks attacked Jewish residents in Lwów, causing 40 civilian casualties.
