Saturday, July 14, 1900. Taking Tianjin.

Tianjin was captured by Allied forces after a three-day battle, with the advancing parties lead by Japanese Colonel Kuriya.

A fire swept through the business district of Prescott, Arizona.

Friday, July 6, 1900. Warren Earp killed.

The Eight Nation Alliance was forced to retreat from Tianjin.

Warren Earp, youngest brother of the famous Wyatt Earp, was shot and killed at the Headquarters Saloon in Willcox, Arizona. Earp, who had a local reputation as a bully, was shot by Henry Hooker's range boss, Johnny Boyett, with whom he did not get along. Boyett was apparently not that good of shot as the fatal shot was the fifth one fired at close range. Earp was unarmed.

Monday, June 18, 1900. The Taku Forts surrender.

The Taku Forts surrendered after a sixteen hour bombardment by ships of the Eight Nation Alliance. Chinse casualties were very heavy. One Russian ship was sunk in the engagement. Four Chinese destroyers were captured, and recommissioned in Western navies.

Sunday, June 17, 1900. Invading China, drafting Roosevelt.

Ships from the Eight-Nation Alliance consisting of Germany, Japan, Russia, Britain, France, the United States, Italy, and Austria-Hungary.started a bombardment of the Taku Forts in China and began an invasion.

There was no declaration of war by this US, making the action arguably illegal, although the point can be debated.

China was, of course, an incredibly weak nation and the mercy of European powers, something that its never forgotten.

At the Republican Convention a movement started to draft Theodore Roosevelt for Vice President.

Lex Anteinternet?

This blog has been around since 2009. In the very first post, we asked the question: "What the heck is this blog about?"

Our answer to the question was: "The intent of this blog is to try to explore and learn a few things about the practice of law prior to the current era. That is, prior to the internet, prior to easy roads, and the like. How did it work, how regional was it, how did lawyers perceive their roles, and how were they perceived?"

We also noted: "Part of the reason for this, quite frankly, has something to do with minor research for a very slow moving book."

All of this is still true, but the focus of the blog has changed somewhat. It now focuses on the era from 1890 to 1920 in general, rather than on the law and lawyers specifically, although that may be far from obvious. It's also become the location where we comment on anything we feel moved to comment on.

We hope you'll feel moved to comment as well. While we moderate every comment, so as to weed out Spam, we greatly appreciate the comments where they are offered, and hope to see more.
