The United States Congress authorized the construction of Mount Rushmore.
Frankly, as a naturalist, I guess, I have real mixed feelings about Mount Rushmore. It's an impressive monumental work of art, but at the same time, I feel that there's no mountain so lacking that carving it into a bas relief improves it.
Apparently some in the legislature really like Mt. Rushmore as there was a bill to create a Mt. Rushmore like monument in Wyoming this year, called the "Monument To America".
The bill died in the House.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy was formed.
