Saturday, October 31, 1914. Convention troubles

Being a Saturday in the Fall, college football was on.

There was brewing trouble in Mexico.



Things weren't going well at the Convention of Aguacalientes.

The Imperial Russian Army prevailed over the Germans and Austro Hungarians in the Battle of Vistula River.

The French and British took back Nieuwpoort, Belgium, brining to an end the Battle of Yser.  The Belgians had lost between 20,000 and 40,000 troops in the campaign, the Germans over 76,000.

The Germans broke through Allied lines near Gheluvelt Belgium but a British counterattack restored the line.

The Japanese Navy began shelling Tsingtao.

The HMS Hermes was sunk by the U-27 in the Starit of Dover.

German troops raided the Portuguese fort at Cuangar, Angola.

The Ecuadorian army defeated rebels at Esmeraldas,Ecuador.

Duluth, Minnesota.

Thursday, October 29, 1914. Turkey bombards Odessa.

The SMS Goeben and SMS Breslau, reflagged as ships of the Ottoman Navy, bombarded Russian ports Novorossiysk, Odessa and Sevastopol in the Black Sea.

The Ottoman Empire had  yet to declare war.

The Germans took the crossroads at Gheluvelt, Belgium.  Followup advances placed their artillery within range of Ypres.

Engineers flooded the lowlands near Yser to retard German advances.

The Polish Legion fought the Russian Army at the Battle of Mołotków with substantial losses.

The Australian government passed the War Precautions Act.

Sunday, October 18, 1914. The editor of Avanti!

The socialist editor of the socialist newspaper Avanti!, declared in favor of intervention on the side of the Triple Entente.  That editor, one Benito Mussolini, was subsequently expelled from the Italian socialist party.

The Germans took Nieuwpoort, Belgium. Armentières,  Messines were halted or slowed.

The Russian Army advanced over the Vistula due to a late deployment of Austro Hungarian troops in aid of German troops.

The submarine HMS E3 was sunk by the U-27, with all hands going down with her.

Belgian and French troops held back the Germans at the Yser.

The British took Aubers at the cost of 1,000 casualties.

The New Zealand Expeditionary Force left New Zealand for Australia.
