The United Nations High Commission on Refugees evacuated of 49 U.S. citizens and their dependents from Vietnam.
The 23 Americans, 14 Vietnamese spouses and 14 children had been stranded in the country after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975.
They were a mixed group. Most had remained in the country against their will, and three had been held in jail, while a few had plead to be allowed to remain in Vietnam.
Trinidad and Tobago became a republic.

Spanish King Juan Carlos I issued a general amnesty for most of Spain's 650 political prisoners and reinstated university professors who had been dismissed for political activities.
Bruce Jenner won the gold medal in the men's decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
A great athlete, and noting that it's not popular to say it, Jenner always appeared a bit odd and at least to me, even back in the 70s and 80s he came across as a homosexual. He later took up a female persona. He was married three times prior to that.
