The Taliban has arrested a woman for defamation for accusing her husband, the former Taliban interior minister, of forced marriage and rape.
The charge by the entity which the United States allowed to take power due to Donald Trump's Doha agreement followed by our withdrawal under President Biden was based on the Taliban position that nobody is allowed to defame the Taliban.

The Ukrainians liberated Vysokopilla in Kherson Oblast. Gains were also made in the Donetsk Oblast. The Ukrainians have had a news blackout on their operations, and it appears clear that the announced successes are just part of a collection of wider successes they have not yet felt comfortable in publicly stating.

While it's not at all clear what's going on, it suddenly seems to be the case that the Ukrainians are advancing all over the front. Fighting has been hard in Kherson, but there are reports today of advancing in the north and the center, with some of these reports coming from Russian sources.
It's too early to really predict what's going on, but if this keeps up, the Russians are in a very bad spot.

What seemed to be promising local advances a couple of days ago is developing into open field running by the Ukrainians, who are now outsmarting and outfighting the Russians darned near everywhere.
Ukraine has retaken Izium in the Kharkiv region, with the Russians openly retreating and admitting as much. This region of Ukraine wasn't even imagined to be the focus of what is turning out to be an effective broad front offensive. They're closing on Sievierodonetsk, whose loss in June was regarded as a major Ukrainian defeat. Some reports had the Russians deploying helicopters to intercept their own fleeing men as they attempted, and failed, to reinforce Izium.
It's still too early to tell, but things are beginning to take on an appearance of a systemic Russian collapse.

Further reports now reveal that the Russian withdrawal from Izium is a disorderly route, with retreating troops mixing with an attempt to reinforce the southern Donbas. Ukraine has retaken Velikiy Burluk which puts them with 15 kilometers of the Russian border.

On this day in 1922, the Anglo-Irish Treaty officially went into effect. In a really confusing technicality, the Irish had two governments during this period, one being a provisional government that was to rule for the remainder of the year until the full transition into a Free State was accomplished. However, as the Irish already had formed a Parliament, the existing Dail, and simply kept it in existence and perhaps can be regarded as the real government. The Dáil Éireann was the technical successor to the Dáil of the Irish Republic, which had ceased to exist in December 6, 1921. While De Valera claimed that it remained in existence after he lost what amounted to a vote of no confidence, nobody had challenged the transition up to that point. Technically the current Dáil dates to 1937, when Ireland adopted a constitution declaring itself to be a republic, and the Dáil Éireann became its lower house.
Members of the provisional government were, in fact, members of the Dáil Éireann, so in reality the latter rather than the former was the government. Michael Collins, the famous republican guerilla (terrorist) leader of the Anglo Irish War was made the chairman of the Provisional Government. He had been instrumental in negotiating the treaty with the United Kingdom.

While both nations were in a shaky position at the time, it's worth remembering that Turkey, while on the defensive, was holding its own against Greece. France and the UK, initially allies in the Greek effort, had abandoned Greece as it became more aggressive in regard to its territorial demands and efforts. The Turks, on the other hand, had shown an inclination to look East into Turkic territories, something the USSR didn't need to happen. Moreover, the Soviet Union was having difficulty imposing its moronic economic system on an unwilling population and its political thumb on various ethnicities, so it was arguably in a worse position than Turkey was. Also, its population was enduring famine to the lunatic nature of its farm policy.
After World War Two Stalin pressed for the return of Imperial Russian lands, but Turkey resisted it, and the Western Allies backed Turkey's position. Soviet demands were dropped, but Georgia and Armenia have never been happy with the border that the treaty created.

Each year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide and recommit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever again occurring. Beginning on April 24, 1915, with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by Ottoman authorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in a campaign of extermination. We honor the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened are never lost to history. And we remember so that we remain ever-vigilant against the corrosive influence of hate in all its forms.
Of those who survived, most were forced to find new homes and new lives around the world, including in the United States. With strength and resilience, the Armenian people survived and rebuilt their community. Over the decades Armenian immigrants have enriched the United States in countless ways, but they have never forgotten the tragic history that brought so many of their ancestors to our shores. We honor their story. We see that pain. We affirm the history. We do this not to cast blame but to ensure that what happened is never repeated.
Today, as we mourn what was lost, let us also turn our eyes to the future—toward the world that we wish to build for our children. A world unstained by the daily evils of bigotry and intolerance, where human rights are respected, and where all people are able to pursue their lives in dignity and security. Let us renew our shared resolve to prevent future atrocities from occurring anywhere in the world. And let us pursue healing and reconciliation for all the people of the world.
The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today.
