May 12, 1921. Storms.

Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa.

The Great Geomagnetic Storm of 1921 commenced on this day, or rather the giant sunspot that's attributed to it was observed first on this day. The actual impact would commence the following day.

So, more to come on that.

Canadian naturalist Farley Mowat was born in Bellville, Ontario.  Mowat was a controversial Canadian author and naturalist.  Born in Ontario, his family moved to Saskatchewan during the 1920s where he was exposed to the outdoors.  In 1939 he joined the Canadian Army and he served throughout the rest of the war, seeing extensive service in Italy and even seeing service in France in 1940 prior to the British evacuation of the country.   His wartime service was the source for three of his books.

A highly prolific writer who wrote both on natural topics and fiction, Mowat came to be highly criticized for several of his works which, critics have argued, were highly fictionalized.  Nonetheless, his works have their defenders who maintain that in spite of their faults, they got the feel of their topics right.

He may be best remembered for his book Never Cry Wolf, which was made into a successful movie.

Edmund Able, who invented the heating element for Mr. Coffee, was also born on this day in 1921.

A mass arrest of Romanian Communist was carried out.

January 2, 1921. Beaches and Balloons.

Winter bathing at Miami Beach, Miami, Fla., Jan. 2, 1921.

News came on this day that an Army balloon that had been missing for several days after taking off in New York had been found near Moose Factory, Ontario, not far from Hudson's Bay.

The story was a dramatic one. The balloon had been missing for days and was far from its point of launching.  All of the crew members were found alive by a Cree Indian who thought, at first, that they were revenue agents.

January 2, 1921: The first religious service broadcast on radio

The radio broadcast was of a service of Pittsburgh's Cavalry Episcopal Church which is still there.

Sunday, July 4, 1909. Independence Day.

The Plan of Chicago, a long range plan for the city, was unveiled.

In Scanton, Pennsylvania, a 16 foot high (including an intricately carved pedestal) bust of Abraham Lincoln was dedicated.  It was a gift from Italy.

It's now missing and nobody knows what happened to it . . .which is odd.

The French battleship Denton, the first battleship to have turbine engines, was launched.  It was sunk on March 19, 1917.

The first fireworks display in Major League Baseball occured at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field.

The Stanley Hotel opened in Estes Park, Colorado.

The Stanley was built by the inventor of the Stanley Steamer and was a luxury hotel.  It's famous, probably unfortunately, for featuring in the movie The Shining, which I've never seen.  I have stayed in the hotel, however, at which time it was under renovation.
