Sunday, September 26, 1976. Rhodesian proposal rejected.

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith's proposal for a two year transition to black majority rule was rejected by the presidents of Zambia, Zaire, Tanzania, Mozambique and Angola.

Palestinian guerillas seized the Hotel Semramis in Damascus after which the hotel was take back by the Syrian Army.  Four hostages were killed in the battle along with the Palestinian commander.  The surviving three guerrillas were hung the following day.

Conflict in the region at the time was even more complicated than it is now.  The Syrians were contesting Palestinian presence in Lebanon, as were various Lebanese forces.

Wednesday, May 19, 1926. Bad coinage idea.

The first and only US coin, so far, to feature a sitting President, the United States Sesquicentennial Half Dollar was issued.

Hopefully this break in tradition will never be repeated.

Zhang Renjie became the first Chairman of the Kuomintang.  His influence would later decline and he immigrated to the United States in 1937.

The French Air Force bombed Damascus.
