The British intervened at Wanxian with bluejackets and marines to rescue the hostages on the Wahnsien and Wantung. A bombardment by the Royal Navy destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in the city, killed 250 Chinese soldiers and 100 civilians.
The Valentina film The Son of the Sheik was released, making the release of the film a posthumous one.
