Asle O. Sorbel, a teenager, met the fleeing Younger brothers and Charlie Pitts near Madelia, Minnesota and recognized them. They were traveling on foot. He rode a plow horse into Madelia, over the objections of his parents, and informed the authorities. The Sheriff and local volunteers rode out and engaged them in a gun battle in a swamp called Hanska Slough, just south of La Salle, Minnesota. Pitts was killed. The rest were taken into custody.
