Thursday, August 19, 1976. Ford prevails over Reagan.

U.S. President Gerald Ford edged out challenger Ronald Reagan, 1,187 to 1,070 in delegate votes, on the first ballot to win the Republican National Convention in Kansas City.  He thereafter chose Sen. Bob Dole as his running mate.

The choice would prove fateful.  Ford was swimming upstream against an insurgent Carter due to the impact of Watergate, when Americans still cared about corruption, and high inflation.  Carter, of course, would prove to be a weak President, giving rise to a successful run by Reagan in 1980, who in the meantime had developed a Southern strategy that would ultimately destroy the GOP.

Thursday, July 22, 1976. Japan's last payment to the Philippines. A President has a sane day.

Japan made its final reparations payment to the Philippines for its actions in World War Two.

President Ford's day:

A couple of observations.

First of all, nice to see a daily Presidential agenda that wouldn't read like today's must:

7:15:  President had Coca Cola and goes into a hate filled Tweet rage

8:00:  President claims Joe Biden stole his Coca Cola.

8:15:  President falls asleep. . . 

Secondly, this was election season and Ford was contacting some state delegates, including some from Wyoming, none of whom I've heard of.

Tuesday, June 8, 1976. The last primaries of the 1976 season.

The final primaries of the 1976 election season were held.  Gerald Ford came out with a lead of 105 delegates over Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter has 1,250 of the 1,505 delegates he needed to secure the election.

Several state conventions remained to be held.
