Territorial Governor John Long Routt was narrowly elected the first State Governor of Colorado in a contest against Democrat Bela M. Hughes.
Routt had been in politics for awhile in Colorado, starting of as the Mayor of Denver. He was a carpenter by trade.
In contrast to the Governor's race, the State Assembly, the first of which was also chosen on this day, was heavily Republican, something that would become a factor in the upcoming Presidential race.
