Friday, January 8, 1926. Crownings.

Today In Wyoming's History: January 8: 1926  Wyoming Pioneer Association incorporated.  

It still exists.

Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud, Sultan of Nejd, was proclaimed King of Hejaz by the Public Assembly at the Grand Mosque of Mecca, brining Ibn Saud one step closer to being the King of Saudi Arabia, which he now effectively was.


Twelve year-old Prince Nguyễn Phúc Vĩnh Thụy was crowned as Emperor of Vietnam at Huế.  He'd reign as Bảo Đại.  He'd never be a popular monarch.

The Hassenfeld brothers formed Hasbro.

Saturday, March 15, 1975. Abandoning Buôn Ma Thuột and Huế.

Gen. Phu gave up on trying to retake Buôn Ma Thuột and ordered his forces to retreat to the coast.

President Nguyen Van Thieu ordered the ARVN to abandon the defense of Huế, and to retreat southward to defend Saigon. The decision led to a mass civilian exodus.

The war was, effectively, over.  The tragedy was not.

It's about this point that eleven year old me really began to take notice of the unfolding drama, although it might have been before that.  A National Geographic map of Vietnam was up on my wall, with my color pencil notations of how things were progressing.

Friday, October 7, 1910. The Baudette Fire.

Forest fires in Lake of the Woods County, Minnesota, destroyed sever towns and killed over 400 people.

Ngô Đình Nhu, South Vietnamese political figure, archivist and brother of President Ngo Dinh Diem, was born in Huế.  From a Catholic Vietnamese family, he adopted the ideology of personalism to create the Person Dignity Theory.  He went from being a bookish intellectual to a key figure in his brother's rise, and was executed along with him in 1963.
