The reconstituted 7th Cavalry and the 5th Infantry, under Terry's overall command moved up Rosebud Creek in pursuit of the Sioux. Crook's command had also moved to the Rosebud, where it was awaiting the 5th Cavalry as reinforcements.
Scout John Wallace ("Captain Jack") Crawford, having already rode nearly 400 miles with dispatches from the 5th Cavalry, and learning they had gone to join Crook, caught up with Crook's camp on the Rosebud.
Crawford was an extremely entertaining character and was known for his storytelling and poetry. He also served as a newspaper correspondent during this period.
