A major event in Chinese and world history occurred when an accidental ignition of gunpowder sparked a police investigation in Wuchang. This sparked an early uprising ahead of one that rebels had been planning using the excuse of popular unrest about a railway crisis.
Plotters included members of the Chinese New Army, which rose up in the region and established a military government.
Elsewhere, in Hubei Province, an order to arrest Chinese Army conspirators resulted in mutineers in control of an arsenal and the provincial treasury.
