Thursday, September 7, 1876. The Northfield Minnesota Raid.

The James Gang was disastrously shot up in their attempt to pull off a bank robbery in Northfield Minnesota. Three were killed outright, others wounded, with arrests following, with posses being made up principally of local volunteers.

Frank and Jesse James escaped, but the raid was the end of the gang.

The raid itself was a really stupid endeavor. The gang members were not folk heroes with a sort of post Civil War partisan ranger aura about them in Minnesota. The local residents, for that matter, proved exceptionally capable in the gun battle that broke out in the town.

Wednesday, July 10, 1901. Registering for 160 acres of Oklahoma.

Registration opened for the Oklahoma Territory land lottery at 9:00 a.m in El Reno and at Lawton. By 6:00 p.m. on July 26, when registration closed, 167,000 people had spent the $25 registration fee to be eligible for one of 13,000 tracts of land of 160 acres each, with drawing to begin on July 29.

Cole and Jim Younger were granted parole after almost 25 years in the Minnesota State Prison in Stillwater, Minnesota for their attempted robbery of a bank in the James Gang's Northfield Minnesota on September 7, 1876.

Chinese Imperial troops were defeated by the Allied Villagers Society at Chichou.

Lex Anteinternet?

This blog has been around since 2009. In the very first post, we asked the question: "What the heck is this blog about?"

Our answer to the question was: "The intent of this blog is to try to explore and learn a few things about the practice of law prior to the current era. That is, prior to the internet, prior to easy roads, and the like. How did it work, how regional was it, how did lawyers perceive their roles, and how were they perceived?"

We also noted: "Part of the reason for this, quite frankly, has something to do with minor research for a very slow moving book."

All of this is still true, but the focus of the blog has changed somewhat. It now focuses on the era from 1890 to 1920 in general, rather than on the law and lawyers specifically, although that may be far from obvious. It's also become the location where we comment on anything we feel moved to comment on.

We hope you'll feel moved to comment as well. While we moderate every comment, so as to weed out Spam, we greatly appreciate the comments where they are offered, and hope to see more.
