Author William Sidney Porter, who would write under the pen name of O. Henry, was released from the Ohio Penitentiary. He's soon begin his prolific writing career.
A very heavy drinker, he died in 1910 at age 47.
The USS Kearsarge inadvertently fired a projectile at the city of Newport, Rhode Island and struck the Newport City Hall.
