Saturday, February 4, 1775. Logan's Lament published by the Virginia Gazette.

I appeal to any white man to say, if ever he entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat; if ever he came cold and naked, and he clothed him not. During the course of the last long and bloody war, Logan remained idle in his cabin, an advocate for peace. Such was my love for the whites, that my countrymen pointed as they passed, and said, Logan is the friend of the white men. I have even thought to live with you but for the injuries of one man. Col. Cresap, the last spring, in cold blood, and unprovoked, murdered all the relations of Logan, not sparing even my women and children. There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This has called on me for revenge. I have sought it: I have killed many: I have fully glutted my vengeance. For my country, I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbor a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one.

Tachnechtoris, or John Logan, or Logan the Orator, after Lord Dunmore's War.

Trump Tariffs and Destroying ourselves.

How bad will it be?

My guess is double digit inflation within two months, a rise in Chinese influence in the world, and the permanent loss of US economic position.

We'll make this a trailing thread.  If the Maga predictions that this will be okay, or just temporary, are true, everything will work out nifty and we'll admit it.

Oh boy!

February 3, 2025

Let's start the Trump  party!

So, just starting off this morning, the Trump Tariffs, which are not yet even in effect, have caused global stock markets to slump, the dollar to strengthen (which is actually bad for the economy), oil prices to rise, and U.S. stock market futures to drop sharply.

The last posted price for Brent Crude was $76.75 bbl.

Lumber futures are $592.00.

The last official inflation rate, from January 31, was 2.9%.

Unemployment was last reported at 4.1% (full employment).

Cont:

More good news!  The price of gasoline is expected to rise by $.15 almost immediately. So the price of absolutely everything will be going up!

Cont:

Mexico agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US border in exchange for delaying the tariffs for one month, which will achieve nothing, actually.

Cont:

Faced with getting a titanic dope slap from Canada, Trump backed off by noting that Canada promised to implement a plan it had already promised to implement.

So, let's recap the results of today, shall we?

Trump threatens to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico (and China).

He declares Mexican drug cartels, which exist only to feed an American, not a Mexican, drug market, terrorists and implies, more than a little, that US forces will cross the border to combat them.

He states the Mexican government is in cahoots with the cartels.

And then, he pauses the stupid tariffs for 30 days when the Mexican government he claims in cahoots with drug cartesl promises to station 10,000 Mexican troops at the border.

Donny, having not served in the military (shin splints, you'll recall) perhaps fails to realize that troops at the border are there to keep people out, not in.

The clear message being, if you dare intervene in your country, you'll have to fight your way in, and out.

Which we tried in 1916-17, to our embarrassment, being defeated by Pancho Villa and Carranza both.

And now, when Donny, in his emphebalement, tells Hegseth, yeah that guy, to go in, and he will, our troops will get shot up going in, and coming out, achieve nothing, and be an embarrassment.

Indeed, one highly polite Mexican I know shyly commented to me, after listening to Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, "um. . . Trump. . . isn't very" you guessed it, smart.

Quite the "art of the deal" there.

And north of the border, Lil' Don has managed to make Justin Trudeau, on his way out in disgrace, into a hero.

Trudeau, in that oh so polite Canadian way, managed to tell the Orange Insurrectionist "fuck you and the horse you rode in on", reminding Americans, who got kicked in the ass by the Canadians in the Revolution and the War of 1812, that we were self interested cowardly boofadors in World War One and World War Two by sitting both wars out until we had no choice but to come in.

Really covering ourselves in glory there.

And, moreover, while the threat is suspended for 30 days, Canadian hatred has been ignited and it will not abate for at least a generation, with American business directly subject to Canadian boycotts that will have an impact.

Trump is not a well man.  He's not a smart man.

He should be dumped by any legal means available.

For those who slept through the history section on the Great Depression.

What Is the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act? History, Effect and Reaction

The Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934 needs to be repealed. That's what allows Presidents to unilaterally raise tariffs.

Populists, who hate Congressional delegation, should get behind this, right?

Saturday, February 3, 1945. When you see those photos of a Red Army sergeant raising the Soviet flag over Berlin, and the city looks wrecked, it wasn't actually the ground combat that caused that.

Berlin sustained the heaviest bombing raid upon it during World War Two when 1,500 USAAF bombers dropped over 2,000 tons of bombs on the city.f

Bombing would destroy large section of the city.  By the time the Red Army took it, it was already in ruins.

One of the casualties of the raid was the despicable Nazi judge Karl Roland Freisler.

US and French units took Colmar.

"American infantrymen of the 2nd Infantry Division advance through fog into the town of Schoneseiffen, Germany, past an enemy antiaircraft gun abandoned when the Germans retreated. 3 February, 1945. 2nd Infantry Division. Photographer: T/4 L. B. Moran, 165th Signal Photo Co."  These soldiers are wearing L. L. Bean Maine Hunting Shoes, which were oddly called "shoe packs" by many people of this era.

The Red Army took Landsberg and Bertenstein.

The Battle of Manila commenced with a flying column of the 1st Cavalry Division reaching the city.  The US conducted an airborne drop in the Tagaytay Ridge region.

"Arriving in Rome, in their Special Service bus are the feminine members of the cast of "Pardon Me", a new USO musical show which will open soon at the U.S. Army Rest Center and the Barberini Theater in Rome. 3 February, 1945. Photographer: Kleinerman, 3131st Signal Service Co."

The weekend magazines, which are largely still subject to the incredibly long US copyright protection laws, noted on its cover that the struggle against Franco was ongoing, demonstrating how by this point Franco was clearly associated with the Axis.

The Assault of Project 2025 and the National Conservatives.

]While the Trump Interregnum Blitzkrieg seems to be spastic and random, and frankly more than a little insane, with the attempt to lure Federal employees into quitting with a dubious offer to be bought out of their employment, blaming DEI for a tragic air accident, and the apparent intent to gut the Federal workforce, it does serve to bring into focus what was already starting to be clear and something we already knew would occur.

Somebody, and we can assume it isn't Trump, who is too dense and lazy to really focus on it, is advancing Project 2025.

Oh, Trump, aware of the meaningless nature of his life to date is backing it and advancing it, in hopes to be "great", these aren't Trump's ideas.  What is Trump's idea is that associating himself with him will reform the nation, which it will, and he'll be associated with its reformation, which he will be, for good or ill.

Project 2025 is radical.  So radical that Trump disavowed any association with it when he was a candidate, but like much he promised, he lied.  Project 2025 is clearly the blueprint for the Trump interregnum, and it will be for the Vance Presidency once that occurs in 18 months or so.  The thing with Trump is that Trump is not an intelligent man, and therefore a ready made blueprint, to the extent he pays any attention to it at all, is ideal for him.  Vance, however, is the real deal.  He believes in it.

Project 2025 was created by the Heritage Foundation. That entity dates back to 1973 and was influential during the Reagan era. There had been far right movements before that, but coming out of the Second World War both parties moved to the middle.  The Vietnam War, however, started the disintegration of that, with the Democratic Party moving to the left and the GOP to the right.  Now virtually worshipped as a conservative hero, Ronald Reagan encouraged extremism in the GOP, thinking he could harness and control it, which he largely did during his administration.

We've gone into the rise of the far right before, but forces that Reagan had under control have really become malignant since that time.  Now they're in control.

They're not dumb.  They largely know that they have to drive Trump like a plow mule or encourage him to diddle at Mara Lago while they run amok for a year and a half. That's all they really have, and they know it, before the electorate, which will now be sick of a wrecked economy, come back on them.

The National Conservatives behind 2025 regard bureaucracy with contempt, the way that many conventional conservatives did before.  Career civil servants, in their view, and an entrenched enemy of efficiency and are, moreover, lazy.  I was once a third party witness to a real argument between a private businessman and a career civil servant, both of whom are ardent Trump supporters, in which the businessman held the civil servant in contempt just because he was a civil servant.  All government employees, in his view, were lazy who would have benefitted from being in the rough and tumble of business.

This view of things has been around for a long time in various forms, and often expresses itself in contempt.  It's, basically, the Protestant Work Ethic and while a lot of the key figures in National Conservatism today are not Protestant, they're Protestantazed in their view on this.

They're also basically trying to bring into creation a United States that Rod Dreher would approve of.  Dreher wrote The Benedict Option but he didn't really mean it.  Enamored with authoritarians who claim to hold conservative values, they're ready to impose their version of them upon the country.  That country would be insular, cut off from the world, and very Orthodox in the Byzantine sense.  Think Russia under the Czars, France under Petain, or Spain under Franco.

The irony of all of this is that on some things real conservatives, such as myself, are sympathetic with the goals of National Conservatives.  I'm not a fan of divorce, abortion, transgenderism, and the like.  But the radicalism that Project 2025 seeks to undertake goes far beyond that, including basically axing the Federal government to the extent possible, wiping out regulation as much as possible, and removing the Federal government from much of what it now does.  In that view they don't really believe in an environment and they feel that human suffering will simply be addressed as it once was, eons ago, by the Church and private parties.  This fits into their world view as well, which sort of is Medieval England before King Henry VIII.

This is going to be a disaster.  Petain and the French far right couldn't bring about a French version of this without force. Franco had to swim in a sea of blood in order to impose this on Spain.  In France, Spain and Portugal the net result was the result of a resurgent left and the ultimate destruction of the right for decades.

All evidence suggest that Trump's initial success, in 2016, was due to his adoption of certain issues that the American middle class felt left out of.  Somehow, however, he converted his base, about 25% of the GOP, into radical worshippers who feel he is incapable of doing wrong.  25% of the GOP is less than half of the electorate.  National Conservatives know that, and they have to, therefore, recreate the United States from a center left/center right republic into Francoist Spain in eighteen months.

They're hard at work trying.

Lt. Jack L. Knight, a cavalryman of the Mars Task Force performed the actions which resulted in his being awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor while in combat at LoiKang, Burma.
He led his cavalry troop against heavy concentrations of enemy mortar, artillery, and small arms fire. After taking the troop's objective and while making preparations for a defense, he discovered a nest of Japanese pillboxes and foxholes to the right front. Preceding his men by at least 10 feet, he immediately led an attack. Single-handedly he knocked out 2 enemy pillboxes and killed the occupants of several foxholes. While attempting to knock out a third pillbox, he was struck and blinded by an enemy grenade. Although unable to see, he rallied his platoon and continued forward in the assault on the remaining pillboxes. Before the task was completed he fell mortally wounded. 1st Lt. Knight's gallantry and intrepidity were responsible for the successful elimination of most of the Japanese positions and served as an inspiration to officers and men of his troop.

"The Dumbest Trade War In History"

Mr. Trump sometimes sounds as if the U.S. shouldn’t import anything at all, that America can be a perfectly closed economy making everything at home. This is called autarky, and it isn’t the world we live in, or one that we should want to live in, as Mr. Trump may soon find out…

None of this is supposed to happen under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement that Mr. Trump negotiated and signed in his first term. The U.S. willingness to ignore its treaty obligations, even with friends, won’t make other countries eager to do deals. Maybe Mr. Trump will claim victory and pull back if he wins some token concessions.

But if a North American trade war persists, it will qualify as one of the dumbest in history.

Wall Street Journal.

Autarky, by the way, was the economic policy of the Nazi Party.
