Oscar Wilde died at age 46 of meningitis. He received a conditional baptism, indicating that there was uncertainty if he'd ever been baptised, shortly before his death, and was received into the Catholic Church. He'd been raised an Anglican.
The Isthmian Canal Commission voted unanimously to recommend to U.S. President William McKinley and to the United States Congress that the proposed canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans be built across Nicaragua rather than the Colombian Departamento del Istmo.
