My Grandfather was inducted into the army on June 23, 1918. He ended up arriving in France on 11-11-18. Served in the Medical branch at base Hospital no. 72. Got back to New York on 4-20-19.
People often forget that a lot of Doughboys didn't get home until 1919.
Indeed, oddly enough, some German troops in the East didn't get back to Germany until 1919. Lots of American, French and English troops were on occupation duty until 1919. American troops continued to see some really hostile activity on the border with Mexico, in addition, into the early 20s.
The common idea that the war ended and all the GIs (to use a WWII term) went right home is quite incorrect.
