Monday, October 12, 1925. Rent.

U.S. troops landed in Panama to put down a renter's strike at the request of President Rodolfo Chiari, which seems like complete BS, frankly.

The Ethel Hays cartoon for today:

The era was one in which Dude Ranches were particularly popular.

Large scale protests and strikes broke out in France, heavily influenced by the French left, against the Rif War.

What's Wrong with Private Jackson's Sniper Rifle? (Saving Private Ryan)

I didn't catch all of these, but did some, particularly the change out of the scopes, which would have been completely impossible.

Sniper rifles in movies in general tend to be inaccurately portrayed, so this is no surprise, I suppose, but for the fact that overall this movie's material details are so well done.

The Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Trinidadian-born pianist Hazel Scott to give a concert at Constitution Hall in Washington because of her race.

It's worth remembering that the "good old days" some would return us to, weren't so good.

FBI agent Edwin C. Shanahan, was fatally shot after following a suspected car thief, Martin James Durkin, to a garage.  He was the first FBI agent to die in the line of duty.

It was a bit of an immigrants take.  Dunkin was an Irish American, and so was Shanahan.  Cop, and cop killer, both of recent immigrant stock, a story that was not uncommon.

Dunkin was convicted and remained in prison until 1954.  He died in 1981.

At Locarno delegates agreed that due consideration would be given to Germany's special military status until such time as a general arms reduction plan could be implemented across Europe. This was thought to secure Germany's entry into the League of Nations.

The Detroit Tigers won the World Series, beating the Chicago Cubs 9 to 3 in game four.

The Chongqing Negotiations (Chinese: 重慶談判) came to an end.

The negotiations were between the Nationalist and the Communists and marked a resumption, after a twenty year gap, of efforts between the two contesting sides to resolve their differences.  Both sides signed the Double Tenth Agreement at the end.

This day would be the last meeting between Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong.

The Double Tenth Agreement provided:

  1. The CCP recognized the KMT as the legitimate ruling party of China
  2. All political parties within China were legalized.
  3. The KMT and CCP would end the war between them.
  4. The formation of a political consultative conference to discuss plans for state building with guaranteed representation of all political parties.
  5. The abolition of CCP and KMT secret services.
  6. Holding a general election to determine the next ruling party of China.
  7. Putting an end to political tutelage within China.
Neither side really fully intended to honor the treaty and it is clear that the Communists did not.

The British completed the reoccupation of the Andaman Islands.

The Allied Control Council abolished the Nazi Party.

The Communist Party of Korea was founded, unfortunately.

Joseph Darnand, a French hero of the Great War, far right politician between the wars to the point of belonging to the La Cagoule terrorist organization, decorated French soldier again upon the German invasion of 1940 only to form the collaborationist militia, Service d'ordre légionnaire (SOL) and become a member of the SS, was executed.  He was 48.

CBS successfully conducted an experiment in color television.

It was, of course, a Saturday.

The Saturday Evening Post hit the stands with a depiction of a cowboy who had just been bucked off.  It was a nice depiction, but the hat with the huge crown was a movie, or dude, type of cowboy hat, albeit one popular in the movies at the time.  Real cowhands would not have worn a hat with such an enormous crown.

The Palace Museum was opened to the public in Beijing by the Republic of China.  The museum was in the former Forbidden City and contained 1,170,000 pieces of artwork.

Upon the Japanese invasion in 1937, most of the collection was moved to Nanjing. During the Chinese Civil War much of the collection was moved to Taiwan, where it remains.

Today is Leif Erikson Day, commemorating the date on which Leif and his crew set foot on North America, probably on Newfoundland.

Well, it was sometime in the fall, probably, and it was in the year 1,000. . . well maybe.

Anyhow, he did do that.

This day is actually set by the a reenactment ship, the Norwegian ship the Restoration, reaching North America in 1825.

Leif was born in Iceland to Erik the Red and his wife Thjodhild and, probably contrary to what many might suppose, he was a Catholic, the religion of his mother.  Interestingly, this was the same year that Iceland converted to Christianity.

October 8 was a Thursday, which makes Life's press date an odd one.  Weeklys came out on Saturday typically, and monthlies on the first day of the month.

Trump’s Plan To invoke the Insurrection Act

Trump’s Plan

To invoke the Insurrection Act

Blog Mirror: Cassie Craven: We Want Our Country Back

From National Archives Today's Documents: Blacksmith class at Benson Polytechnic School, Army Training Department, Portland, Oregon. 7/26/1918

A truly deluded Cowboy State Daily column.

Cassie Craven: We Want Our Country Back

Craven is a right wing lawyer out of Cheyenne and is picking up her news from media.

It's interesting to note how this can work.  During the Second World War, very informed Germans who wanted to know what was going on clandestinely listened to the BBC, while many others listened to or read the German news.  Listening to the BBC was illegal.  Anyhow, many were shocked after January 1945 to find that, in spite of all the evidence that was before their eyes, they were losing the war, and in fact were going to lose it.

This is going on in our society now, although its obviously not illegal to listen to the BBC.  About half the country is absolutely horrified by what's going on, but there's a percentage, let's say 25% to 33% that fully accepts what Trump is saying.

Is Portland a war zone? Absolutely not. Is it left of center?  Yes, it has been for decades.  Is there any problem at all?

Yes, homeless on the streets, like in LA, or in Denver, or Oklahoma City, or even to a small degree like Casper.  That's a universal American problem.

It doesn't call for the deployment of troops.

This will end badly.

But Craven's "we want our country back" is actually what she means, and many who support Trump mean. The thing is, however, that the country she wants back, never existed.

Tuesday, October 7, 1975. Lunch.

Congress overrode President Ford's veto of the Federal school lunch program by an overwhelming majority.

Let's look at a couple of things not on the lunch menu.

I'll be frank, I'm quite indifferent about bologna.

Having said that, when I was a kid, we always had "cold cuts" in the fridge, in case you wanted to make a sandwich, which I rarely did.  I preferred thin sliced ham, which Safeway had, and would eat that quite a bit, often just eat it.  No sandwich.

I've discussed government assisted school lunch here before, but the interesting thing here is the overwhelming popularity for it.  I dare say, if it came up today, it'd be voted down.
