Monday, April 1, 1946. The April 1, 1946 Aleutian Islands Earthquake

The April 1, 1946 Aleutian Islands earthquake occurred which resulted in an tsunami that devastated parts of Hawaii, most notably Hilo. Up to 173 people were killed, mostly in Hawaii.

Warnings were given but many ignored them, thinking them an April Fools Day joke. The event is responsible for a much improved warning system.

Bituminous coal miners went on strike in the U.S.

The U.S. Navy destroyed 24 Japanese submarines. Seems like a terrible waste really.

The UK made Singapore a Crown Colony and separated it and its mostly Chinese ethnic population from Malaya.

Porfirio Díaz opened anew session of the Congress of Mexico outlining his plans for reform, including limiting presidential terms to one.

Emilio Aguinaldo, Prisoner of War and formerly the president of the Philippine Republic, signed an oath of allegiance to the United States.

General Leonard Wood, the American military governor of Cuba, refused to certify the selection of Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso as the Mayor of Havana in spite of his having been chosen by the city council in a 12–10 vote.

Scottish laborers walked off the job seeking an eight hour day.

British Governor of Northern Nigeria Sir Frederick Lugard outlawed the future purchase or sale of slaves, the return of a runaway slave to his master.

Currently enslaved people and concubines were not freed and could continue to be sold.

It was Holy Monday on the new calendar.

Lex Anteinternet?

This blog has been around since 2009. In the very first post, we asked the question: "What the heck is this blog about?"

Our answer to the question was: "The intent of this blog is to try to explore and learn a few things about the practice of law prior to the current era. That is, prior to the internet, prior to easy roads, and the like. How did it work, how regional was it, how did lawyers perceive their roles, and how were they perceived?"

We also noted: "Part of the reason for this, quite frankly, has something to do with minor research for a very slow moving book."

All of this is still true, but the focus of the blog has changed somewhat. It now focuses on the era from 1890 to 1920 in general, rather than on the law and lawyers specifically, although that may be far from obvious. It's also become the location where we comment on anything we feel moved to comment on.

We hope you'll feel moved to comment as well. While we moderate every comment, so as to weed out Spam, we greatly appreciate the comments where they are offered, and hope to see more.
