On this date in 1972 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) was implemented worldwide.
Austrian statesman Kurt Waldheim became Secretary General of the United Nations. He served in that role until 1981, and then became President of Austria.
While in that later role, his wartime service in the German Army became a matter of controversy, although interestingly his prewar membership in the SA seemingly did not.
Closer to home
The calendar in 1972 matched the current one, so my day in 1972 would have been much like my probable day today, save for the intervening differences that fifty years obviously make.
