It was unusual as shoppers found the food they were looking for themselves, rather than present their list clerks who found the items for them. The business plan was revolutionary.

I've (obviously) always taken grocery stores, or "super markets" for granted. However this post reminds me of self-service gas stations, and how they were thought of at first. Some people loved them, while others wanted someone else to wash their windshields. Very interesting.
I can remember my mother talking about the first time that she ever went into a "self-service" grocery store. She always made it sound a like she felt a little frightened by the prospect of needing to find and select what she wanted to buy.
Interesting comments. It makes me wonder how small grocery stores worked in the past. I know that there was quite a bit of interaction with the grocers, but there must have been more than I imagined really.
