Court appointments have been a major accomplishment of the Trump Administration, something that's largely attributable to the work of Mitch McConnell. Even if Trump loses in the Fall, which now appears nearly inevitable, there will be a legacy of conservative court appointments for decades.
The release of names now likely serves as a reminder to conservatives that Trump has come through in this area, and in spades. Should Trump beat the odds and go on to another four year term, it will inevitably mean that he'll add at least one more conservative Supreme Court Justice to the bench and perhaps retain one or two conservative seats that might otherwise be lost in the next four years. In other words, the Supreme Court is really in the balance, and given the nature of decisions in some areas over the last decade, that's a lot at stake.
