A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Jeanette Rankin,  born 1880 in Missoula, Montana, died 1973 Carmel, California.  First Congresional campaign, 1916.  Last considered campaign, 1972.

Her opposition to war twice cut her political career short, and causes her to be remembered as a heroic figure today.

Elizabeth Cheney, born 1966, Madison Wisconsin.  Her opposition the January 6 insurrection cut her career as Wyoming short, or so it seems right now.

The only thing, the Cheneys never saw a war they didn't like.

I don't really adhere to the concept of familial guilt or virtue, so to speak. I frankly was never a fan of Dick Cheney, when he was in any office, and he can answer for his own acts.

Liz Cheney was only in office since 2017, and the only war that she was openly in favor of during that period was keeping on, keeping on, in Afghanistan. My view on Afghanistan early on is that we had no duty to rebuild the state there, but once we took it on, under Bush II, we had a moral obligation to see it through, and I agree with Liz Cheney on that. The pulling out concept, for which Biden has taken the blame, was Trump's, which the GOP has hypocritically forgotten.

Since 2017 Hageman has largely been a Cheney supporter, and turned against her only after January 6. Given that, I'm sure that Hageman would take the position of being against "endless wars" now, but would she have been that way in 2019. We'll never know.

At any rate, being against long wars is 1) an American thing, and 2) a democratic thing. Getting into wars is easy, and nearly the entire population of a country is for it when it starts. When they turn difficult, as they often do, people forget their original enthusiasm. FWIW, in my view, going into Afghanistan was necessary at the time, which I thought at the time. Building a new state there was not, which I thought at the time, but once you begin to, you're bound. Going into Iraq was another matter, and not necessary the second time, and in my view an illegal act. Ironically, I guess, in my view that's worked out a bit better.
