Wasn't the M4 Sherman designed for the radial engine, but then someone decided the radials were needed for aircraft, so they went to a V-type engine but left the "humpy" hull?

I'll confess that I'm not hugely up on M4 engines. The first M4s did take a radial, and some later models did as well, but not all of them did as time went on. At least a couple models took diesel engines.
