Wars and Rumors of War, 2023, Part X, Declarations

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
Matthew, Chapter 24.

The flags of Israel, apparently Hamas, and the crest of the Palestinian Authority.

We'll first bring this edition up to date with some entries from the last one:

October 7, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Hamas launched a large scale offensive against Israel yesterday, sending both ground forces and rockets across the border.  Israel has termed it a war and has called up reservists.

October 8, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Russia bizarrely called for a ceasefire between the warring parties.

Civilian casualties are about equal so far, each standing at about 250 persons.  Hamas took hostages back into Israel.

October 9, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

In something, we just don't see occur anymore, but which we really should, Israel has actually issued a Declaration of War, of course against Hamas.

Declarations are a formal legal document and really without one, at least legally, a state of war does not exist.  This is, therefore, not only a throwback (which it shouldn't be) to an earlier era, but an important legal step.

Israeli ground troops have not yet entered Gaza (we anticipate that it will) but Israel has placed Gaza under siege.  Nothing is coming in or out.

The US has moved ships closer to the region.

In acts of supreme stupidity, some members of Congress or others who are simply opponents of Joe Biden are blaming him for Hamas' actions.  Truly, that's really off the wall.  Look to see for some of those who rally to Israel's defense to be the same parties who are opposed to Ukraine's, and look for cries of US support to Israel from some of the same who would dump support for Ukraine, even though Ukraine is a democratic country, like Israel, also fighting for its existence.

Worth noting, one of the Hamas targets was a "rave" party, perhaps accidentally, in support of peace at which young Israeli's were gathered. Reports indicate that not only were attendees gunned down in cold blood, but at least two young women were raped next to the dead bodies of their friends and then viciously murdered.

This gives us two recent examples, which should not be forgotten, of armies using rape and murder as weapons against civilians, one being Putin's Russian army in Ukraine, and now Hamas, which claims Islam as part of its founding principles, in Israel.  Any army doing that loses all claims to legitimacy.

Hamas controls 74 seats out of the Palestinian's 132 in their parliament, giving them the majority.  How this war plays out is yet to be seen, but it has to call into grave question the land for peace strategy that Israel followed starting at the time of the Camp David Accords.

It is worth noting that Hamas' funding comes from donations, Gaza in particular being economically unviable.  Presently, a large percentage of that comes from Iran, which is somewhat ironic due to the traditional hostility between Sunni and Shia Islam. Hamas is primarily Sunni.  Other regional Sunni states are major economic donors as well.  Iran is also a backer of forces opposed to the US in Syria.

Israel has called up 300,000 reservists.

October 10, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Hamas operations in southern Israel expanded yesterday, and the IDF fought Hamas in thirteen locations on the West Bank. Hezbollah crossed Israel's northern border in a rocket supported raid.

This is all contrary to news reports, which have largely failed to mention that guerilla operations are expanding.

Hamas has called for a general mobilization for Friday.  This is unlikely to occur.

cont:

I think people will not believe the reports of what happened in Kfar Aza and Kibbutz Beeri. Even though Hamas posted photos and videos on their own Telegram channel. Because these are ISIS tactics. Beheaded babies and burned corpses. Yes, I saw the photos.

Lisa Goldman, Canadian journalist.

This assertion is hotly disputed by Palestinians.

October 11, 2023

Russia v. Ukraine

Russia lost a bid, not surprisingly, to regain a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.  Its obtaining a seat would have rendered the Council a complete joke.

It was suspended last year.

The Ukrainian offensive is back down to proceeding at a snail's pace.  There's really no way to put a happy spin on this.

October 11, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

US advanced weaponry has begun to arrive in Israel.

There are additional reports today that Hamas killed children and infants.

cont:

Liz Cheney has repeated the item about Hamas murdering 40 babies.  I note this, as Cheney has been a source that I trust, and whom certainly turned out to be correct about other foreign policy matters.

cont:

U.S. intelligence indicates that Iran, just like Israel (and the U.S.) was surprised by he Hamas assault on Israel.

That's likely because they would have tried to call it off, knowing that the falling chips would lead to a disastrous Hamas result in the end.

October 12, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Israel hit the Aleppo and Damascus airports in airstrikes, one just before an Iranian diplomat was set to land. His plane turned around back to Iran.  The plane apparently also contained members of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Russia v. Ukraine

Ukraine is apparently working on port arrangements with Romania in order to ship grain from that country.

cont:

Hamas has called for a global day of jihad to take place tomorrow.

cont:

The Royal Navy, like the U.S. Navy, has now deployed in assistance to Israel.

October 14, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Israel notified the United Nations early today that the 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza should relocate to the enclave's southern 12 miles within the next 24 hours.

This points out what I've stated elsewhere, but which very little of the media seems to be grasping. By the Palestinians giving their allegiance to Hamas, they're effectively doing the same thing that the Germans did by having given their allegiance to the Nazis.  They've invited destruction to rain down upon them.

There will be comments that the Israeli counteroffensive is disproportionate to what occured, but that misses the point.  It's not what should happen, it's what will happen.  Israel will go into Gaza and 1.1 million Palestinians will not be able to relocate. There will be numerous civilian deaths.  Palestinians, who excel at playing the wrongfully aggrieved party, will howl with remorse in the way common to Middle Easter people, but the end of Gaza as an effective entity is probable, and it's very likely that the end of Hamas will occur.

Things are going to get much worse, no matter how you look at it, before they get better.

North Korea v. South Korea

North Korea complained about a U.S. aircraft carrier being in South Korea.

Russia v. Ukraine

Russia has launched an offensive in the north, around Avidiivka.

Ukrainian offensive actions continue on elsewhere, but are slow.  As noted elsewhere, the Ukrainian offensive never really advanced at a significant rate and while it recently gained significant ground, it's bogged down again.  There are those trying to put a happy face on it, but what has been demonstrated is that the Ukrainian military, at present, is incapable, or unwilling to sustain the massive losses it would require, to advance at a rate that will bring it victory.

The Russians, for their part, are incapable of the same.

We're entering a World War One style stalemate.

Russian authorities are forcing dioceses of the Kremlin-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate. to join the Russian Orthodox Church.

cont:

The Jerusalem Post can now confirm based on verified photos of the bodies that the reports of babies being burnt and decapitated in Hamas's assault on Kfar Aza are correct.

May their memory be a blessing.

The Jerusalem Post.

cont:

Right in the middle of this map is a brown strip called the Gaza Wadi.  Everyone north of that line, which is everyone in Gaza city proper, has been told to evacuate by tomorrow.

It likely cannot happen, but the fact that the instruction has been given is telling.

Also telling are some of the facts and figures on this map, including the 46% unemployment rate and the 60% poverty rate.  Obviously, the entire Gaza Strip is untenable. It can't, and never will be able to be, anything more than sort of a welfare state.  Israel has not wanted it. Egypt, whose border with it is closed (something other countries seem to have no problem doing) tells us all we need to know about Egypt's view about Gaza.

A situation in which the Palestinians are impoverished welfare clients of the world, and more particularly of the Arab world, armed in order to give Israel grief by the Muslim nations of the Middle East, can't go on forever.  They will not overcome Israel and this situation cannot go on.  None of the options are comfortable, but they should be discussed.

Of note, over 6,000,000 non-Saudi nationals are employed in that country.

600,000 non nationals work in Bahrain.

4.9 million non nationals work in Dubai.

The entire Palestinian population of Gaza could be taken in by Arab states that need workers.  Yes, they may not want to go there either.  But to remain, they'll have to live how to accommodate themselves to reality, or this will go on and on. They should not be removed, of course, by force, but that may be just about to happen.

October 15, 2023

Hamas v. Israel

Republican Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, who is Jewish, was arrested Friday for carrying a firearm at a pro-Palestinian rally on Thursday.  There have been calls for her removal from office as a result.

Frankly, her carrying a handgun at the event, which she was observing, was perfectly rational and fits exactly within the Second Amendment.

Egypt has completed a concrete barrier to block Palestinian entrants from Gaza.  Their border is very small, so they will be able to enforce it.

Qatar has refused to take Palestinian refugees.

Russia v. Ukraine

Russia has not conducted an airstrike against Ukraine since September 21, indicating that they are likely storing missiles for a winter offensive.

Afghani Civil War

A bomb outside a mosque killed fifteen people in the country yesterday.

A day like any other.

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

Matthew, Chapter 24

For most people, no matter what the day has been declared to be by the hateful, this will be a day like any other.

Yes, it will be a day full of horrors and sorrows.

Addicts will die on the streets, like they do every day.  Father's won't acknowledge the children they caused for entertainment, like every day.  Couples will break up over trivialities. Alcoholics will make an excuse to have another drink.  Elderly men and women still working, and some not so elderly, will feel their comprehension slipping, and suspect that they might know what that means, but push it back.  Cancer will make people ill, some people not realizing yet that they are ill but knowing something is wrong.  Spouses will cheat on each other.  Young men in urban environments will kill others as its all they know how to do.  People who ignore looming crises due to their own wallets or personal wishes, no matter what it means for the greater good.  Liars will continue to lie, and the gullible and willing will continue to listen to them.

And most of that will be ignored.

But cataclysm everywhere?  No more than the one that happens every day, most places, which we fail to see.

When a war ends is when the defending party decides that it is over.

Yeoman's Fifth Law of History.  When a war ends is when the defending party decides that it is over.

This is about to be played out in spades.

When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, and followed with the invasion of France in 1940, the war was supposed to end. The British, however, didn't agree, and by 1945 Germany was finished as a fascist power.

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 Japan figured on. . .well figured on something. They didn't figure that by 1945 the Allies would end the Japanese Empire for eternity and two cities would lay in nuclear ruins.

When the South attempted to depart from the Union in 1860 and laid siege to Ft. Sumter, it didn't figure on Sherman marching across the South in 1865.

And when Hamas invaded Israel earlier this week, it didn't figure on an Israeli invasion of Gaza that would end Gaza as a Palestinian entity.

But that is likely to happen, replete with all the human tragedy that will accompany it.

Putin, Hitler, Mussolini, and the thousands resorting to invasion on the theory it achieves something are the blistering ignoramuses of history.  Later this week, the news will feature wailing Palestinian women lamenting the deaths of their loved ones, many of whom intellectually sided with the entity which committed horrors on their neighbors and who have no better solution than to follow the sword.  Many outside their support, and some who had not given it, and indeed most fit into this category, will be innocent victims of the death their political leaders invited to rain down upon them.

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

Human beings seem incapable of learning this lesson.

Some seem less capable of learning it than others.

Any ignoramus can start a war.  Wars end, when those who were hit first, decide to quit hitting back.  Almost as often as not, that last blow is struck by those hit first.

Russo Ukrainian War

Six Ukrainian deputy defense ministers were fired on Monday as part of an ongoing cleanup of corruption in the Ukrainian defense department.

Post Soviet Union Ukraine has been plagued with corruption, as has post Soviet Union Russia.  This is no surprise, as the Soviet system encouraged corruption by its very nature, and so that post Soviet societies would feature a lot of it is to be expected.

Ironically, this fact has led opponents of supporting Ukraine, which is democratic and is fighting a just fight, to cite the corruption as a reason to allow the country to be conquered by Russia, although they don't put it that way.  While the country has featured a lot of corruption, Russia's is now endemic and currently not only that case, but watching modern Russia is a lot like watching Goodfellas in real time.

Following 2013's Euromaiden protest, the country has moved increasingly towards the west and has had a strong desire to join the European Union and NATO.  That is what has, in no small part, brought the current war about, as Putin, a Russian nationalist at heart, is opposed to that and sees Ukraine as a mere Russian province.  Efforts to join NATO have lead to a list of further items Ukraine must address in order to do so, once the war is over, and cleaning up corruption will no doubt continue.

The ISW is giving praise to Ukrainian offensive efforts near Bakhmut, which it cites as having kept Russian forces committed in that area, leaving the Russians unable to reinforce further south.  It's reporting that Russian forces in both areas are suffering severe degradation.

Iran v. Kurds

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has deployed unis to the border with Iraq in an effort to put pressure on Iraq to arrest Kurdish efforts in Iran.

Iran messes heavily in regional conflicts, taking an active pro-government role in Syria for example.  Here, however, the war in Syria and the conclusion of the war in Iraq has led to Kurdish semi autonomy, which has in turn lead to Kurdish activity in northern Iran.

Azerbaijan v. Armenia

Azerbaijan’s declared an “anti-terrorist” campaign in Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is under Armenian control. Armenian media indicated air raid sirens and mortar fire in the regional capital of Stepanakert had been observed.

Russo Ukrainian War

The Prime Minister of Poland has announced; "We are no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming ourselves with the most modern weapons".

Poland and Ukraine have been in a dispute over grain, which has been flooding the Polish market as Ukraine's ports have been blocked, even while Poland has been a major supporter of Ukraine's war effort.

In spite of the way it's been portrayed, historically Poland and Ukraine have not gotten along and following World War One fought over their respective borders.  During World War Two, Ukrainian nationalist militias committed acts of genocide against Polish villagers.  The recent Polish support of Ukraine may reflect Polish animosity towards Russia as much as anything else.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul, who is a libertarian with isolationist tendencies, is holding up the most recent funding for Ukraine.

What both of these stories point out is that the slow moving progress of the Ukrainian offensive, while receiving support from some analysts such as those from the ISW, presents real problems in terms of ongoing Western support.  Ukraine's strategy, from those supporting it, is reputed to be a slow moving offensive using artillery to attrit Russian forces, made necessarily in part by a lack of air assets.  That may be correct, but if it is, Ukraine may find itself with decreasing material support from the West including the United States should the U.S. far right gain in Congress.

Russo Ukrainian War
Russian forces have reportedly made notable changes to their command and control (C2) in Ukraine to protect command infrastructure and improve information sharing, although Russian force deployments are likely still exacerbating issues with horizontal integration. Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) Deputy Director of Analysis Magarita Konaev and CSET Fellow Owen Daniels stated on September 6 that Russian forces moved headquarters out of range of most Ukrainian strike systems and have placed forward command posts further underground and behind heavily defended positions.[1] It is unclear if Russian forces have employed this more protected command infrastructure throughout Ukraine and to what degree these defensive efforts have impeded Ukraine’s ongoing interdiction campaign.[2] Konaev and Daniels stated that Russian forces have improved communications between command posts and units at the front by laying field cables and using safer radio communications.[3] The Royal United Services Insitute (RUSI) stated on September 4 that Russian forces are also trying to improve signals through the wider use of application-based C2 services that require less training.[4] Konaev and Daniels noted that signals at the battalion level downward are still often unencrypted and that Russian personnel still frequently communicate sensitive information through unsecure channels.[5]

The Russians, the same ISW report notes, are changing their artillery tactics to emphasize accuracy over mass fire, a change that was long ago implemented in Western armies but comes about here due to ammunition shortages.

These changes, it should be noted, if successful, would amount to improvements in Russian capabilities.

The Russo Ukrainian War has served to make Kim relevant in ways he was not before, one of the ways being that, given the fall of the Warsaw Pact following the end of the Cold War, it's one of the few countries in the world manufacturing the old Soviet patter munitions that Russia is consuming which will also export to Russia.

South Korea, for its part, has became an arms supplier as well, shipping armor to Ukraine and Poland, and artillery to Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces advanced near Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, the commander of the 58th Army, has been relieved of his command.  He announced his removal to his troops.

The Group of Seven and NATO signed agreements to offer Ukraine long-term security commitments, signalling a more formal arrangement to come, likely after the conclusion of the war.

This more or less means that unless Russia completely defeats Ukraine in the current war, one of Russia's war aims has been lost.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including sections 121 and 12304 of title 10, United States Code, I hereby determine that it is necessary to augment the active Armed Forces of the United States for the effective conduct of Operation Atlantic Resolve in and around the United States European Command’s area of responsibility.  In furtherance of this operation, under the stated authority, I hereby authorize the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Homeland Security with respect to the Coast Guard when it is not operating as a service in the Navy, under their respective jurisdictions, to order to active duty any units, and any individual members not assigned to a unit organized to serve as a unit of the Selected Reserve, or any member in the Individual Ready Reserve mobilization category and designated as essential under regulations prescribed by the Secretary concerned, not to exceed 3,000 total members at any one time, of whom not more than 450 may be members of the Individual Ready Reserve, as they deem necessary, and to terminate the service of those units and members ordered to active duty.

This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

                             JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

This is the first time I've actually seen an order which refers to the Individual Ready Reserve.  It makes sense, actually, as IRR troops may have individual skills that would be useful in a t raining role.

My guess is that the IRR troops will be all volunteers for activation.

Wagner has been seen in Belarus and there are plans for it to conduct joint drills with the Belorussian army.

Something about this is really odd, and has to relate to whatever deal was struck.   The Belorussian Army is generally regarded as pretty bad, FWIW.

Russia has pulled out of the Black Sea grain shipment deal.

On This Week, Chris Christie maintained that Russia's war in Ukraine is being backed by the Chinese for Chinese objectives. This is becoming a persistent Republican theme.  That the Chinese may be backing Russia doesn't surprise me, but the suggestion that the war is a Chinese proxy war, which is being made, doesn't ring true.

July 19, 2023

Russo Ukrainian War

As Russian minefields take their toll on western-supplied tanks and Ukrainian sappers, their forces have so-far retaken approximately five miles of the sixty miles they need to split the land-bridge connecting Russia to Crimea. The land between Mariupol in the east and Melitopol to the west is seen as the vital ground to achieving this.

It is incredibly tough going for the Ukrainians. They lack the air cover and advanced jets to protect their ground forces from Russian attack helicopters and fighters. Their soldiers, meanwhile must negotiate miles of minefields, tank-traps and then ultimately the heavily dug Russian trench networks.

This gruelling endeavour was always going to take longer than the occasionally impatient international audience was prepared to wait for. It is a military effort of immense proportions, where mass, manpower, morale, equipment, stocks, logistics, grit and luck all play vital roles. So far, the Ukrainians are displaying all of these military qualities.

* * *

While much fighting remains to be done across Ukraine’s southern farmlands over the coming months, governments across the west must be prepared for the grim prospect of territorial concessions as one potential political outcome of a failed counter-offensive. Whether a Putinist Kremlin would respect such a deal if Kyiv were to receive security pledges short of full Nato membership is extremely doubtful.

Regardless, this would surely be a favoured outcome for China’s ruling “wolf warrior” foreign policy elite. Beijing would be utterly delighted if the war were to end with Ukraine divided, Russian troops permanently in the Donbas harassing Kyiv and Europe, and Nato fractured on political lines. Such an outcome would be a gift to China as Xi Jinping begins to ramp up his own imperialistic and extra-territorial ambitions across the Indo-Pacific – and a devastating defeat for the West.

The Telegraph.

Russia is amassing vast numbers of troops and equipment along the northern frontline in Ukraine, Kyiv has warned.

Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesperson for the Eastern Group of Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, told local television that Moscow had gathered more than 100,000 troops on the Lyman-Kupiansk axis, as well as 900 tanks, 555 artillery systems and 370 multiple rocket launchers.

Newsweek.

The Ukrainians are obviously not beaten, and ISW feels the troops in the north that Russia intends to commit to a counteroffensive are of poor quality and will not be successful, but it's obviously the case that the Ukrainian offensive is not achieving its goals in the face of Russian defense in depth and massive use of mines.

Now Ukraine is in a battle to get back more of the land that Russia seized from it. It's already taken back about 50 percent of what was initially seized. Now they're in a very hard fight to take back more. These are still relatively early days of the counteroffensive. It is tough.

July 27, 2023

Russo Ukrainian War

Ukrainian forces launched a significant mechanized counteroffensive operation in western Zaporizhia Oblast on July 26 and appear to have broken through certain pre-prepared Russian defensive positions south of Orikhiv. Russian sources, including the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and several prominent milbloggers, claimed that Ukrainian forces launched an intense frontal assault towards Robotyne (10km south of Orikhiv) and broke through Russian defensive positions northeast of the settlement.[1] Geolocated footage indicates that Ukrainian forces likely advanced to within 2.5km directly east of Robotyne during the attack before Russian forces employed standard doctrinal elastic defense tactics and pushed Ukrainian troops back somewhat, although not all the way back to their starting positions.

Russo Ukrainian War

A Defense Department briefing of Congressmen has stated that Ukraine will not reach the southeastern city of Melitopol, presuming that to be a key objective, and therefore will not sever Russia’s land bridge to Crimea this year.

The report attributes it to minefields and Ukraine determining to ignore Western advice to use a schwerpunkt, particularly after having encountered initial heavy Russian resistance and large-scale losses, something amplified by a lack of air cover.

The report finds that Ukrainian forces will remain several miles outside of Melitopol at the conclusion of the offensive.

There's no way to put a happy face on this conclusion, if it comes true.  Opting for attriting Russian forces was reverting to World War One tactics.

At the same time, however, there are now reports of Ukraine committing troops in large numbers which it had held back earlier.

As an aside, somehow those who hate everything Biden and love everything Trump will find a way to criticize that pretty honest comment, whereas if Trump said the same thing (which he couldn't due to his weird diction), they'd think it the soul of wit.

Russo Ukrainian War

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the Kremlin have been destroying the Wagner private military company (PMC) and weakening Prigozhin’s authority since the rebellion – and the assassination of Wagner’s top leadership was likely the final step to eliminate Wagner as an independent organization.

She was the flight attendant of Embraer Legacy 600 Business Jet blown out of the sky in order to kill Yevgeny Prigozhin and other Wagnerites.  The young woman had taken the flight in order to be able to return home and to her next station early.

It's not possible to weep for Yevgeny Prigozhin.  He lived by the sword and died by it, and the actions of his men have been brutal.  It is possible to hope that he realized the gravity of his sins and reconciled before his death.

But killing innocent stewardesses is just flat out murder.

China v. Taiwan

The US has approved $80,000,000 in aid to Taiwan under the Foreign Military Financing, something normally only done for soveign states.

Taiwan, which is the Republic of China, has never declared independence from China. Rather, it's claim to be China's legitimate government has been quietly abandoned over the years.  The People's Republic of China, of course, claims the island as it's own and continually threatens to invade it.  In reality, Taiwan is de facto independent if not de jure, a status which really ought to change, and which this is a step towards.

It'll probably enrage the Red menance.
