Sunday, January 23, 1944. Halting at Anzio.

British infantrymen meeting U.S. Army Rangers outside of Anzio.  In the early hours of the operation there was little resistance and things were very fluid.  Both Rangers in the foreground are carrying M1 Garands and wearing the "Jacket, Combat, Winter", which is  erroneously associated with tanker s today.  At least the Ranger on the right is wearing a pair of winter trousers as well.  The soldier on the right has a large "H' on his helmet cover, which is an identifying mark I'm not familiar with.  The soldier on the left appears to have the same mark.  Both British solders are wearing leather jerkins.

36,000 Allied troops had already disembarked by the prior midnight, 13 had been killed, and 200 German prisoners of war taken, including a drunk German officer and orderly who had driven his staff car into an Allied landing craft.  There'd be 50,000 troops on the ground by the end of the day.

Allied troops, under Lucas' command, took up forming defensive positions in anticipation of a counterattack, a decision that was soon controversial, and frankly, a mistake.  This is interesting for a variety of reasons, one of which is that Lucas was originally a cavalry officer, with cavalry being the only branch in the U.S. Army that was dedicated to battlefield mobility and had a doctrine of always moving forward. That view as not shared by the other branches.  Having said that, Lucas had transferred out of the cavalry after World War One.

The German forces did debate what to do.  Kesselring, in command in Italy, believed the Gustav Line could be held along with the beachhead at Anzio. Von Vietinghoff favored withdrawing from the Gustav Line.  The German High Command, meanwhile, allocated reserved from France, northern Italy and the Balkans to the effort.

By the week's end, the Allies would be facing 8 German divisions at Anzio.

Saturday, October 13, 2023. Our Lady of Akita.

The Virgin Mary appears to Sr. Agnes Sasagawa at Akita, Japan, for the third and final time, telling her:

My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superior

.As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests.

The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres...churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them.

With courage, speak to your superior. He will know how to encourage each one of you to pray and to accomplish works of reparation.

It is Bishop Ito, who directs your community.

You have still something to ask? Today is the last time that I will speak to you in living voice. From now on you will obey the one sent to you and your superior.

Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary. I alone am able still to save you from the calamities which approach. Those who place their confidence in me will be saved.

The prior two messages were:

July 6, 1973

My daughter, my novice, you have obeyed me well in abandoning all to follow me. Is the infirmity of your ears painful? Your deafness will be healed, be sure. Does the wound of your hand cause you to suffer? Pray in reparation for the sins of men. Each person in this community is my irreplaceable daughter. Do you say well the prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist? Then, let us pray it together."

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with Your Heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the altars of the world and giving praise to the Father pleading for the coming of His Kingdom.

Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as You will for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls.

"Most holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Your Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Your Special Child. Amen.

When the prayer was finished, the Heavenly Voice said: "Pray very much for the Pope, Bishops, and Priests. Since your Baptism you have always prayed faithfully for them. Continue to pray very much...very much. Tell your superior all that passed today and obey him in everything that he will tell you. He has asked that you pray with fervor.

August 3, 1973

My daughter, my novice, do you love the Lord? If you love the Lord, listen to what I have to say to you.

It is very important...You will convey it to your superior.

Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls to console Him to soften the anger of the Heavenly Father. I wish, with my Son, for souls who will repair by their suffering and their poverty for the sinners and ingrates.

In order that the world might know His anger, the Heavenly Father is preparing to inflict a great chastisement on all mankind. With my Son I have intervened so many times to appease the wrath of the Father. I have prevented the coming of calamities by offering Him the sufferings of the Son on the Cross, His Precious Blood, and beloved souls who console Him forming a cohort of victim souls. Prayer, penance and courageous sacrifices can soften the Father's anger. I desire this also from your community...that it love poverty, that it sanctify itself and pray in reparation for the ingratitude and outrages of so many men.

Recite the prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist with awareness of its meaning; put it into practice; offer in reparation (whatever God may send) for sins. Let each one endeavor, according to capacity and position, to offer herself entirely to the Lord.

Even in a secular institute prayer is necessary. Already souls who wish to pray are on the way to being gathered together. Without attaching to much attention to the form, be faithful and fervent in prayer to console the Master."Is what you think in your heart true? Are you truly decided to become the rejected stone? My novice, you who wish to belong without reserve to the Lord, to become the spouse worthy of the Spouse, make your vows knowing that you must be fastened to the Cross with three nails. These three nails are poverty, chastity, and obedience. Of the three, obedience is the foundation. In total abandon, let yourself be led by your superior. He will know how to understand you and to direct you.

A solid theological opinion, such as held by such as Jimmy Akin, is that messages from the Virgin Mary, when they occur (and no Catholic is obligated to regard them as genuine), are specific for their time.  He feels, in this instance, that the warning from Our Lady pertained to the period in issue.

The message, however, has been getting a lot of attention recently, in part due to the Synod.  It's the following line that such people are focused on:

The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres...churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

Am I adopting this view?  No, I'm not adopting any view at all. But I will note that the rapid expression of moral laxity that some clerics, including Bishops and Cardinals, are now expressing, is distressing.  It tends to fly in the face of human experience, and I'd argue evolutionary biology, as well as seemingly the long standing positions of the Church, dating back to St. Paul.

Wednesday, February 14, 1923. Veterans, Radio Hockey, Women Marksmen, French Debt Collecting

Hollywood, California, February 14, 1923.

Some Spanish American War veterans visited Washington, D.C.  They were in a class of veterans that would increasingly be forgotten due to the swell of veteran ranks caused by World War One.

The members of George Washington University's Women's Rifle Team, located in Washington, D. C., were photographed.

Women have competed in the shooting sports forever.  Interesting to see this photograph of a group of young female marksmen in an urban environment, before firearms caused people living in cities to freak out.

Toronto's CFCA broadcast, on this Valentine's Day of 1923, the first NFL game to be subject to the same.

The game was between the Toronto St. Patrick's, now the Maple Leafs, against the Ottawa Senators, which is now defunct.  Toronto won 6 to 4.

CFCA would only broadcast for ten years before going out of business.

French authorities seized 85,000,000 Marks from the city hall treasury of Gelsenkirchen, and 17,000,000 from the railway station, in retaliation for the city's refusal to pay 100,000,000 Marks due to the wounding of two French officers in clashes with the police.

Wednesday, January 31, 1923. Hockey first.

For the first time in history, a National Hockey League match concluded with no penalties having been imposed.  The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Hamilton Tigers, 5 to 4.

Hockey, unlike football, is not boring.

Italy required public school students to start using the extended arm fascist salute, claimed to have been derived from Rome, but with little historical support for the proposition.

The general gesture was in vogue at the time, having been popularized in the United States as the Bellamy Salute.  It's co-opting by fascism, forever associated it with fascist movements.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt Jr., occupying the position that his father had leading up to the Spanish American War, and his cousin had during World War One,  addressed the midyear graduating class of the Peter Force School, a school he had attended during his father's occupancy of the office. The class planted a Lombardy Poplar in memory of Quentin Roosevelt, aviator, who had died in action in World War One.

The school had been founded in 1879 and was named for a former Washington, D.C. mayor.  Many children of important personages attended the school, including the late Quentin Roosevelt and Charles Taft, the son of President Taft.

The school would not have a much longer run.  It was abandoned in 1939 and demolished in 1962 in order to make way for the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies.

Friday, November 20, 1942. The Axis reels in defeat.

The Siege of Malta ended after 2.5 years.

The Axis effort to isolate and eliminate Malta as a British asset had been conducted principally from the air, but had also been heavily supported by the German and Italian navies.  For almost all the siege the defense of the of the island, which used numerically inferior numbers of aircraft, had been a strictly British affair, aided only in the end by the U.S. Navy assisting in ferrying aircraft to Malta.  It was a resolute British victory.

The tide had been turning since the British had been able to reinforce the island with new aircraft in 1942 and emergency supplies had been run in, keeping the island from starvation. The Germans had more or less given up in October, but Axis defeats in North Africa made maintaining the siege impossible, as the Axis had been required to switch its air assets to the failing campaign in North Africa.

Malta had been independent until 1798, having been governed by the monastic Order of Saint John, which lost power to Napoleon.  The Maltese rebelled and asked for British help, with the island becoming a British protectorate in 1800.  It became a Crown Colony in 1813, obtaining home rule in 1947 and independence in 1964.

The British 8th Army retook Benghazi, Libya.

The Red Army opened up phase two of Operation Uranus with Stalingrad Front commander Andrei Yeremenko opening up the southern prong after the fog lifted.  Again, Romanian troops failed and collapsed, with German forces attempting to react.  By then end of the day, only the 6th Romanian Cavalry Regiment stood between the Red Army and the Don.

April 23, 1920. Mexican rebels issue the Plan De Agua Preita, Men Misbehave, Women visit the Supreme Court, Turkey becomes a republic, The House of David extends their thanks.

It stated:
PLAN DE AGUA PRIETA
Hermosillo, Sonora. 29 de abril de 1920.
CONSIDERANDO:

The basic gist of the plan was an accusation that Carranza had betrayed the values of the revolution and that Obergon was to lead the military until a new government could be put in place.

Agua Prieta is a border town that joins Douglas, Arizona.

Douglas Arizona, 1904.

Troops were being rushed to that border, including specifically the one between Douglas and Agua Prieta, out of concern where the Mexican Revolution was heading.  The Navy, meanwhile, was deploying in the Gulf.  1920 was beginning to look a lot like 1916.

Across that border and into custody came one newly appointed Carranzist Governor of Sonora, Ignacio Pesqueria, who had lately been the Chief Justice of Mexico.

Pesqueria was a wealthy man whom Carranza felt was suited to replace the De La Huerta, whom he still presumed to be the Governor, apparently not realizing that De La Huerta had resigned to take up arms against Carranza alongside Obregon.  Pesqueria, who was almost certainly related to a Mexican revolutionary of that name from earlier times, may not have thought his appointment likely to last long as he entered Douglas with one Maria Rodriguez, whom the press informed to be 23 years of old and "beautiful", the broad hint being that the relationship between the two may not have been fully proper.  Justice Pesqueria was married to someone else and had nine children.  He was ostensibly arrested for bringing Senorita Rodriguez across the border, but that may have well been a pretext.  Of course, the relationship could have been fully innocent.

Clearly not innocent were the attentions being paid to a bank cashier's wife by a banker, which was resulting in a scandal in Buffalo.

The attentions of prominent men may have been drawn in an improper fashion to women in Sonora and Wyoming, but in Washington D. C. prominent women were seeking the attention of the United States Supreme Court.

Leaders of the Women's National Party were in town to attend a session of the court which was to hear a case pertaining to an Ohio referendum which potentially stood to push women's suffrage over the top and into the Constitution.

And a group of men came to thank the President for allowing them to grow their hair and beards while in the service of the United States during World War One.

Members of the House of David religion, about which I know next to nothing, their tenants preclude the cutting of hair and favor the growing of beards.  The President had intervened on their behalf during the Great War, for which they came to offer their appreciation.

The religion, which still exists, is often recalled today for fielding a barnstorming baseball team early in the 20th Century.

In Turkey the Turkish Grand National Assembly convened in Ankara in a move that was on its way towards the establishment of the modern Turkish republic.  On the same day an Allied conference announced its intent to recognize Armenian sovereignty and allow Greece to administer a Turkish Smyrna.

And ice hockey premiered on this day as an Olympic sport.

The National Hockey League Formed

Birthplace of the NHL, the Windsor Hotel, in 1906.  It's an office building today.

There was hockey before that, and its a bit of a complicated story, but on this day in 1917 the National Hockey League was formed by representatives of the Ottawa, Quebec, and Montreal National Hockey Association clubs at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal.  The formation came about due to an intense dispute within the National Hockey Association, the prior organization, which soon ceased to exist with the creation of the NHL.

The Seattle Metropolitans win the Stanley Cup

On this day in 1917 the Seattle Metropolitans became the first US hockey team to win the Stanley Cup.

The Metropolitans were members of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. They beat the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey Association three games to one.
